OTTAWA (Thomson Financial) - Canada's surplus in international merchandise trade grew by 13 pct to 5.8 bln cad in April from a revised 5.1 bln in March, as imports declined while there was little change in exports, Statistics Canada said.Exports edged down 0.3 pct to 40.7 bln cad from a revised 40.8 bln in March. Imports fell 2.2 pct in April to 34.9 bln cad, driven by declines in all sectors except energy, the statistics institute said.Declines in energy, automotive products and forestry exports overshadowed record high exports of industrial goods and agricultural and fishing products, Statistics Canada said.The surplus figure for April exceeded analysts' expectations of between 4.8-4.9 bln cad.Canada's exports to countries other than the US reached 10.1 bln cad, up 7.7 pct, while imports from those countries were virtually unchanged at 12.4 bln cad.Exports to the US fell 2.6 pct to 30.6 bln cad, while imports from the US decreased 3.3 pct to 22.6 bln cad.tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomson.comcmrCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
