VIENNA (Thomson Financial) - Austrian vaccine company Intercell AG said it has published pre-clinical data on its vaccine programme for a wide-spread human pathogen, Pneumococcus, in the latest edition of the biomedical periodical Journal of Experimental Medicine. The article reports the two lead candidates forming the basis of Intercell's subunit pneumococcal vaccine were found to be exceptionally conserved among clinical isolates and that these play important non-redundant roles in bacterial multiplication, Intercell said in a press release.Pneumococcus (streptococcus pneumoniae) causes infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia, and is responsible for around 1.5 mln deaths worldwide.fiona.flanagan@thomson.comff/lamCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
