Britain's low-cost airline Easyjet has seen a 25% surge in passengers for the month of April as compared with corresponding figures for the last year.
An estimated 1.95 million passengers traveled by Easyjet in April 2004, while this number leapt to 2.44 million passengers in April 2005. Easyjet chief executive Ray Webster said in a statement, "Taking into account the effect of Easter falling in March rather than April this year, underlying market conditions have remained unchanged."
Easyjet has announced the establishment of its second Swiss base airport in Basel. Additionally, the airline inducted the 100th aircraft into its fleet when it took delivery of Airbus A319 in April. Easyjet now has about 37 Airbus aircraft in its fleet.
The Luton-based airline company has also added five new routes from Bristol.
| Easyjet's load factor was 85.2 per cent in April as compared to 81.6 per cent a year earlier. Easyjet is a budget airline founded by Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the Greek entrepreneur and flies to more than 60 destinations. At the end of April the company's revenues stood at an impressive £1.22 billion.
NCB analysts commented on these figures by saying, “We continue to believe that the low-cost airlines will be able to weather any such storm, as they will attract the more price conscious consumer who is trading down from the full service carrier."
This year Easyjet has also developed bases at Berlin and Dortmund. Meanwhile, Easyjet's nearest rival Ryanair reported a 24 percent jump in passengers in the month of April.
