LONDON: Luton-based low-cost airline easyJet PLC, said revenues rose 20.5 percent at £1.38bn, a result of adding new routes and increasing services. It said it carried a total of 30.3 million passengers, marking a rise of almost 18 percent over previous year’s passenger numbers.
In a trading statement issued yesterday the no-frills airline said it saw an 11.1 percent increase (year on year) in the number of passengers at 2.37 million in December. Chief executive Andrew Harrison said the numbers for last month “were in line with our expectations”.
The upbeat airline is riding high on growing revenues despite soaring fuel costs. Full year revenues for 2005 rose 20 percent at £1.38 billion, from last year’s £1.15 billion. It reported strong growth also in unit revenue for the month, i.e. total revenue per seat flown.
The few declines included a .02 percent slide in the airline’s load factor – the proportion of the number of passengers against the number of seats available.
Its success is believed to attract predatory bids. The owner of Icelandair - FL Group, is expected to make a possible bid. It has already built up 16.2 percent stake in easyJet by purchasing shares in the secondary market.
In what is seen as a defensive measure, easyJet appointed Goldman Sachs as its advisor. The investment bank will work alongside Credit Suisse First Boston, easyJet’s broker.
