(updating with further details)MILAN (AFX) - Finmeccanica SpA and the Russian railways are to link up soon to build regional electric trains in various locations in Russia, said Russian railway chairman and CEO Vladimir Yakunin.Speaking in Rome, Yakunin said he also plans cooperation agreements with Finmeccanica and the Italian railways on high speed trains and on railway infrastructure technology.'We already have various projects underway with Finmeccanica,' he said during a visit on railway cooperation.'I believe that shortly, within about a month, an agreement can be reached for constructing regional electric trains in Russian plants,' he said.Ansa news agency said the deal being discussed with Finmeccanica already involves about 50 trains.Finmeccanica officials declined to comment on the potential value of orders that could emerge from detailed cooperation deals as a result of the memorandum of understanding signed today.Finmeccanica unit Ansaldo Breda builds all types of trains, while 40 pct quoted affiliate Ansaldo STS SpA builds train signalling and other systems.A Finmeccanica statement said agreements foresee joint training of staff, automation systems, signalling, and other infrastructure projects.Finmeccanica and the Italian and Russian railways expressed their interest in constructing a high speed link between Moscow and St Petersburg, it said.nigel.tutt@thomson.comnt/jlc/nt/jlcCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
