TEMPE, Ariz. (AFX) - US Airways Group Inc. said Friday it will apply to offer nonstop service to China on a route becoming available in 2008.The airline will also ask federal regulators to delay consideration of a similar request by rival Delta Air Lines Inc.The Department of Transportation evaluates U.S. proposals for new service to China as part of an agreement signed with Beijing in 2004 that called for a total of 195 new weekly flights phased in over a six-year period.United Airlines this week won final approval for a nonstop route from Washington to Beijing, following an aggressive competition.Airlines have been fighting to connect the U.S. with the booming Chinese economy.Delta Air Lines in late January applied to offer service from Atlanta to Shanghai. US Airways asked federal regulators to defer consideration on the application until other applications can be submitted.Delta recently fought off a hostile takeover bid by US Airways.US Airways shares fell $1.22, or 2 percent, to close at $58.09 on the New York Stock Exchange on a down day overall for the airline industry.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
