LONDON: Mobile phone operator Orange has concluded a deal with the BBC to offer ringtones and film clips from the latter's TV shows such as The Office, Little Britain and Doctor Who.
Under the deal, BBC Worldwide, the broadcaster's commercial section, will provide this content to Orange, which will in turn offer it to subscribers of its Orange World service as a paid service at 3.50 pounds for a ringtone, 2.50 ponds for a wallpaper image and 75 pence to 1 pound for a video clip.
Orange said the arrangement will be on a revenue-sharing basis.
This is the first time the BBC has been offering its content to a mobile phone service providers. BBC Worldwide's director of business development Jason Blain said this is one of the ways the division is looking to move towards non-traditional broadcasting vehicles. He added that legitimate BBC content on mobiles will put an end to the unauthorised content currently available.
In the recent past, mobile phone companies have been looking at various sources of content to fill up the fast developing 3G network. Vodafone has tied up with BSkyB, while Orange itself has similar arrangements with Bravo and CNN.
Meanwhile, the BBC is learnt to be in talks with other mobile service providers to offer its content for use on the networks.
