SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A federal judge expelled three Ecuadorean plaintiffs from a lawsuit against Chevron Corp. after concluding they lied when they claimed they or their relatives suffered from cancer caused by the oil giant's operations in the South American country.U.S. District Judge William Alsup said he based his decision in part on the testimony of one of the plaintiffs, a woman who admitted in a pretrial deposition that her son did not have leukemia as she and her lawyers had maintained.'It is clear to the court that this case was manufactured by plaintiffs' counsel for reasons other than to seek a recovery on these plaintiffs' behalf,' Alsup wrote in a ruling issued Aug. 3.The three were part of a group of seven Ecuadoreans who sued Chevron for personal injury last year, claiming that chemical dumping by Texaco Petroleum Co. before it was acquired by Chevron had contaminated the rain forest region where they lived.Chevron said in a statement that it planned to challenge the credibility of the remaining plaintiffs.Meanwhile, the San Ramon-based company is at the center of a long-running trial in Ecuador involving similar claims brought in a class-action lawsuit on behalf of 30,000 villagers and Amazon Indians.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
