NEW YORK (Thomson Financial) - Vion Pharmaceuticals Inc. Monday said it achieved its targeted response rate in a recent Phase II trial of its anticancer agent, Cloretazine. The study, initiated in March 2006, tested drug responses in 80 patients with poor-risk acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) across North America and Europe. Patients had a median age of 73 years. At the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology in Atlanta, Vion said the overall complete response rate was 35%. Nearly all responses occurred after the first induction treatment.'Based on these data at this time, we believe that we have achieved the targeted response rate for this study,' the company said.Vion plans to file a new drug application with the Food and Drug Administration in 2008 based on both this trial data and a previous Phase II trial that also focused on elderly patients with AML.Shares of the New Haven, Conn.-based cancer treatments developer closed Friday at 83 cents.Melinda Peermp/pcCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
