ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - GE Healthcare, a unit of General Electric Co., and biotech drug developer Novavax Inc. said Monday they have agreed to partner to develop and market an avian flu vaccine system for certain countries. The companies said the proposed facility could allow vaccine manufacturing to begin within 12 weeks of isolating the strain of flu, without using eggs or a live virus -- as little as half the time compared with currently available processes.Novavax's vaccine for H5N1 pandemic flu, or avian flu, is currently in early stage clinical trials.GE Healthcare will contribute a new portfolio of systems and devices that are designed to reduce the time it takes to build and validate a vaccine production facility.Shares in Novavax rose 9 percent to $4.30 in premarket trading from a $3.95 close Friday.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
