NEW YORK (Thomson Financial) - Cephalon Inc. Monday said patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) who received Treanda (bendamustine) in a Phase III trial had better clinical outcomes than patients treated with chlorambucil, an FDA-approved therapy for patients with CLL.'In this study, bendamustine was more effective than chlorambucil in achieving remissions in treatment-naive patients with CLL,' said a lead investigator of the study. 'On the basis of these positive results, bendamustine could be an important first-line chemotherapy option for patients with CLL.'CLL is a slow-progressing blood and bone marrow disease. Results from the large-scale international study were presented at the Annual American Society of Hematology meeting in Atlanta. Also presented at the meeting were Cephalon's Phase III trial findings that Treanda induced a high rate of response in patients with indolent non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) whose disease had progressed during or following treatment with rituximab.'Because many patients with NHL eventually become resistant to treatment with rituximab and other therapies, new treatments are always required,' said a lead investigator of the study.NHL is a slow-growing cancer of the lymphatic system that is difficult to treat because patients are prone to relapse after treatment.Shares of the Frazer, Pa.-based developer of cancer and neurological disorders closed Friday at $76.54.Melinda Peermp/pcCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
