TAIPEI (XFN-ASIA) - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (2330.TW) said its joint venture with Royal Philips Electronics NV -- Systems on Silicon Manufacturing Co Pte Ltd (SSMC) -- will be in a better position to comment about its own business operations or plans.TSMC made the statement when asked to comment on a local report that it may be considering building a 12-inch-wafer plant in Singapore through SSMC.'For such matters, one should turn to SSMC for comment,' TSMC spokesman JH Tzeng said.TSMC owns 38.8 pct of Singapore-based SSMC, and Philips spinoff NXP Semiconductors holds the remaining 61.2 pct.'If TSMC is really planning to build a new plant overseas, it will do so on its own instead of through SSMC, which is an independent entity,' he said.Earlier, the Economic Daily News reported that TSMC recently assigned one of its senior staff familiar with running 12-inch-wafer plants as SSMC president, who may discuss the possibility of building a new plant there with the Singapore government. As of 9.12 am, TSMC was down 1.00 twd at 65.00.(1 usd = 32.70 twd)philip.wang@afxasia.com
