TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Elpida Memory Inc and Toshiba Corp are introducing cutting-edge semiconductor chip products ahead of South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co, in a bid to reap large profits as the first mover, the Nikkei reported, without citing sources.Elpida has begun production of DRAM chips with circuit widths of 70 nanometers at its Hiroshima plant, the business daily said. The new chip can help lower materials outlays and cut production costs by more than 40 pct, while its capacity is 60 pct greater than a similarly sized one based on the 90nm technology, it said. The Japanese chipmaker lagged behind Samsung by more than half a year in when rolled out chips using 90nm circuitry, but was three months ahead in introducing chips based on 80nm technology, the report said.Toshiba will this month start producing NAND flash memory based on 56nm circuitry at its Yokkaichi plant in Mie Prefecture, the business daily said.Samsung is expected to start mass-production of flash memory chips using 50 nm technology in the first quarter. The new chips have 60 pct greater capacity compared with existing products using 70nm technology, it said.Toshiba lagged behind Samsung in the mass production of flash memory chips with 90nm circuitry, but has matched the South Korean producer in more recent releases, it said.(1 usd = 119.66 yen)yasuhiko.seki@xfn.com
