BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - The European Commission said it referred its inquiry into the proposed 375 mln eur acquisition by Carrefour of Dutch peer Royal Ahold NV's Polish retail operations, Ahold Polska, to Poland's competition authority. The EU referral follows a request from Poland. The EU executive said it referred the case in its entirety as it considers the proposed concentration would only affect competition in Poland. It also decided to refer the case for 'efficiency reasons and in order not to split the proposed transaction.'Ahold currently operates 179 supermarkets under the 'Albert' brand, four 'Hypernova' hypermarkets and four gas stations in Poland. The Ahold operations employ approximately 10,000 people. The commission recently extended the deadline for its inquiry to tomorrow from March 23.nina.chestney@thomson.comnc/vsCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
