LONDON - Airports operator BAA said that its year-on-year traffic rose 3.9 percent in June in what it called "a continuation of a trend of gradual improvements in underlying growth seen since the start of the year".
BAA operates seven sites in UK including Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. It said that 13.9 million passengers used its airports in June, thus continuing the increased numbers started at the beginning of the year. Passengers traveling to India increased by 55.4 percent, while the Chinese route grew by 49 percent, BAA said. "We are seeing huge growth as these economies and routes open up," a BAA spokesman said.
But there was a considerable drop in European charter traffic, which fell by 7.5 percent. This slide was arrested partly by the increasing traffic to India and China. BAA agreed last month to be acquired by Spain’s Grupo Ferrovial, in a £10.3 billion deal. This update was its first since that deal was agreed to.
Growth on long-haul routes increased by 8.2 percent, but this figure did not include North American data. North Atlantic grew by 2.9 percent, while European scheduled traffic increased by 8 percent. Of the airports under BAA's control, Stansted saw the biggest increase with a 11.2 percent gain to 2.25 million passengers.
Heathrow passenger numbers grew 2 percent and Gatwick by 2.9 percent. BAA added that Aberdeen traffic rose by 11 percent, while that of Edinburgh grew by 3.4 percent. Glasgow was unchanged.
