LONDON (AFX) - Severe storms in the English Channel delayed ferries between Britain and France today, at one point closing the main southeast English port of Dover, a port spokeswoman said.'All sailings with P&O Ferries and SeaFrance to Calais, Norfolkline to Dunkirk and Speedferries to Boulogne are disrupted due to the adverse weather conditions,' the spokeswoman said.'Passengers are advised to contact their operator for further information,' she added. She said the port was closed before dawn between 0510 GMT and 0745 GMT when winds hit storm force 10 on the Beaufort Scale, or up to 102 km per hour. The port reopened when west-southwesterly winds dropped to gale force nine, or wind speeds up to 87 km per hour.About 50 ferries normally leave Dover daily around the clock. The English Channel is one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, particularly over the 40 km stretch between Dover and Calais on the northeast French coast.Elsewhere as gales and heavy rain hit Britain, winds reached 144 km per hour in Scotland and low-lying eastern English counties were put on flood alert.newsdesk@afxnews.comafp/twCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
