SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Vical Inc., which develops gene-based therapies, said Wednesday its vaccine booster significantly increased the immune response to a flu vaccine in mice.In an animal study, the company used their Vaxfectin vaccine adjuvant together with Sanofi-Aventis SA's Fluzone vaccine and found it increased antibody responses by 60 times that of the Fluzone vaccine alone. An adjuvant is a compound that stimulates the immune system and increase its response to a vaccine. The addition of Vaxfectin also allowed researchers to use 10 times less vaccine to generate the same or better immune response in the mice, compared with a standard dose of the vaccine alone, the company said. The company is developing its own flu vaccine to be used with Vaxfectin to protect against strains of flu that could potentially cause a pandemic. Vical expects to begin human testing of the modified vaccine in the second half of the year.In October, the company released animal study data showing that its Vaxfectin formulated flu vaccine provided 100 percent protection to ferrets against a lethal strain of the H5N1 bird flu.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
