CHICAGO (AP) - Passengers flying out of Los Angeles Wednesday on United Airlines began paying an extra $10 to offset a $10 million increase in rent charged by the Los Angeles airport, the airline said.United Airlines believes the rent increase, which was imposed on all airlines in December, violates United's long-term lease agreement with Los Angeles World Airports, which oversees the airport.United, along with AMR Corp.'s American Airlines and Continental Airlines Inc. sued the airport in January, and 22 other airlines filed a complaint about the rent increase with the Transportation Department in February.Kevin Knight, senior vice president of planning at United, said, 'Passing along this surcharge to our customers is not our preferred action, but the recent sharp increase in costs to operate at LAX has left United with no other option.'Shares of United rose60 cents to $42.50 in midday trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
