US March business inventories fell 0.1 pct vs. 0.3 pct expected increase

WASHINGTON (Thomson Financial) - US business inventories fell 0.1 pct in

March on a 1.4 pct sales increase, as consumers cleared out retailers' stocks

faster than analysts had been expecting.

Canadian April unemployment stable at 6.1 pct

MONTREAL (Thomson Financial) - The Canadian unemployment rate remained

stable at 6.1 pct in April, but job growth unexpectedly stopped after strong

increases since September 2006, the Canadian statistics office said.

US April PPI up 0.7 pct, core PPI unchanged

WASHINGTON (Thomson Financial) - US inflation at the wholesale level

continued to rise in April while core inflation, which strips out volatile food

and energy prices, was tamer than expected and posted its smallest yearly gain

since October, the Labor Department said today.

US April retail sales down 0.2 pct, first drop since September 2006

WASHINGTON (Thomson Financial) - US retail sales fell 0.2 pct in April,

their first decline since a 0.6 pct drop in September of last year, the Commerce

Department reported today.

German government sees budget balanced by 2011

BERLIN (Thomson Financial) - The German federal government said it will

reduce its budget deficit to zero by 2011 at the latest, with the overall state

budget -- comprising the federal government, regional governments and

municipalities -- expected to be balanced by 2010 at the latest.
