SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed fines Wednesday totaling $40,150 for the owner of a cold storage warehouse where an employee was injured in March. The worker was hurt when his hand became caught in an unguarded augur on a conveyor system. Sodus Cold Storage Co. was cited for 18 alleged willful, serious and other safety and health violations.'Machine guarding is an essential safeguard designed to prevent any part of an employee's body from coming in contact with or being caught in the moving parts of machinery,' OSHA's Syracuse area director Christopher Adams said. 'In this case, failure to maintain the guard on the augur resulted in a serious incident in which an employee was needlessly injured.'The company has 15 business days from receipt of the citations to request and participate in an informal conference with OSHA or contest the fines.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
