SAN FRANCISCO (Thomson Financial) - ViroPharma Inc. said Monday a committee of the European Medicines Agency has granted orphan drug designation for Camvia for the prevention of cytomegalovirus disease in patients with impaired cell-mediated immunity.Under EMEA guidelines, the orphan drug designation provides 10 years of potential market exclusivity if the product is approved for marketing in the European Union. The designation also permits EMEA assistance in a drug's clinical development through participation in designing the clinical protocol and preparing the marketing application. The product also may qualify for a reduction in regulatory fees. The orphan drug designation is designed to promote the development of drugs which may provide significant benefit to patients suffering from rare diseases identified as 'life-threatening or very serious conditions.'Shares of Exton, Pa.-based ViroPharma rose 10.7% to $8.69.Gabriel Madwaygm/jwCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
