FRANKFURT (AFX) - KarstadtQuelle AG's Thomas Cook has assured workers in an internal letter that job cuts in Germany should not result from the company's merger with package tour operator MyTravel Group PLC, according to Thomas Cook's works council.

Thomas Cook employs 4,200 workers in Germany, 1,800 of whom are based at the company's headquarters in Oberursel, near Frankfurt.

Meanwhile, CEO of KarstadtQuelle Thomas Middelhoff said during a press conference that the company planned to rebrand itself and announce a new company name at its annual general meeting in May.

Package tour operators MyTravel Group PLC and KarstadtQuelle's Thomas Cook confirmed today that they are to merge.

Following the deal, KarstadtQuelle will own 52 pct of the group and MyTravel the remainder.
