TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Mitsubishi Motors Corp is considering producing cars in Russia, but so far has no detailed plan for doing so, the company said.

Mitsubishi Motors was responding to a newspaper report saying that it is considering getting together with PSA Peugeot Citroen to assemble cars in Russia.

The company said in a written statement: 'Local production is one of our options to expand our business.'

But it added that it had no detailed plan at the moment.

The company said it had approached the government in Moscow about the possibility of producing cars in Russia and was conducting market research.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported that Mitsubishi Motors and Peugeot Citroen would invest 50 bln yen in building a factory in the suburbs of St Petersburg with a capacity of 200,000 vehicles a year.

The plant is likely to start operating as soon as 2010, producing the next generation of Mitsubishi's Lancer sedan, the newspaper said.
