TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Canon Inc will buy what shares it does not own in a 50-50 joint venture with Toshiba Corp, as it has decided to mass-produce SED televisions on its own, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its evening edition, without citing sources.By acquiring Toshiba's entire stake in SED Inc, which develops and manufactures panels for SED (surface-conduction electron-emitter display) TVs, Canon aims at an early settlement of a legal dispute brought by US firm Nano-Proprietary Inc, the business daily said. The purchase price is believed to be around 10 bln yen, it said. The American company has licensed a key SED technology to Canon, but claims that the agreement does not extend to SED Inc because the firm is not a Canon subsidiary, according to the report.Canon will draft a new plan to mass-produce SED TVs with cooperation from Toshiba, and some 200 Toshiba employees who currently work at SED Inc will also continue at the firm, it said.(1 usd = 120.55)yasuhiko.seki@xfn.com
