John Lewis week to Jan 6 dept store sales up 8.3 pct

LONDON (AFX) - John Lewis Partnership, the employee-owned retailer, said

sales at its 26 UK department stores rose 8.3 pct to 55.7 mln stg in the week to

Jan 6, while sales at its chain of 183 Waitrose supermarkets rose 14.1 pct to

67.0 mln stg.

TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Canon Inc said it will buy out the stake held by Toshiba

Corp in their 50-50 joint venture as it has decided to mass-produce SED

(surface-conduction electron-emitter display) televisions on its own.

Japan's Sharp aims to increase LCD TV sales by 50 pct in next FY

TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Sharp Corp is aiming to sell 9.0 mln liquid crystal

display televisions worldwide in the fiscal year ending March 2008, 50 pct more

than it expects to sell in the current fiscal year, the company said.

Home Retail's Argos eyes Indian expansion - report

LONDON (AFX) - Argos, the catagloue retailer owned by Home Retail Group, is

close to signing a joint venture deal that will see it open stores in India,

according to a report in the Telegraph.
