LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Department store chain Dillard's Inc. on Thursday said an early Easter holiday helped boost March same-store sales as shoppers bought juniors' and children's apparel. For the five-week period ended April 7, Dillard's posted a same-store sales increase of 6 percent. Dillard's performance topped the consensus forecast of Wall Street analysts, who expected a same-store sales decline of 0.2 percent, according to Thomson Financial.Same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, are a key measure of retailer performance, because they measure growth at existing stores rather than from newly opened ones.Total sales rose 8 percent during the month, to $679.6 million from $631.9 million in March 2006.Last year, the company got its Easter shopping boost entirely in April, which may skew its same-store sales results into March from April. For the nine weeks ended April 7, same-store sales fell 1 percent. Total sales so far this fiscal year have been nearly flat at $1.27 billion versus $1.28 billion a year ago.Dillard's operates its namesake department stores in 29 states.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
