PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) - Biopharmaceutical company Affymax Inc. said Thursday its anemia drug Hematide showed positive results in a midstage study and the company is preparing for late-stage studies.Hematide is being tested to treat anemia associated with chronic kidney disease. The Phase II clinical trial results show the drug can maintain hemoglobin levels in patients following a switch to the once-monthly drug. The study involved 165 patients who switched from a thrice-weekly treatment with Epoetin Alfa.Amgen Inc. and Johnson & Johnson both sell Epoetin Alfa drugs, called Epogen and Procrit, respectively.Affymax's newly released data deals with 90 patients who have completed a six-month treatment regimen. The drug was also generally well tolerated with a side effect profile consistent with patients on hemiodialysis, Affymax said.The company is currently discussing the design of a Phase III clinical trial with the Food and Drug Administration.Shares of Affymax were up $1.69, or 5.3 percent, to $33.89 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
