MADRID (Thomson Financial) - Delphi will open a new plant in Morroco that will perform the same tasks as the factory in Cadix, southern Spain, which it has just closed at the cost of 1,600 jobs, reported El Mundo, without identifying its sources. The online edition of the daily said Delphi will open a factory at Tangiers -- barely 90 kilometres from Cadiz -- within three years, having signed a letter of intent with the Moroccan government.El Mundo says the decision to open the factory, which will employ around 3,000, was made at the same time as the group decided to close the Cadix plant.Delphi, which has been operating under bankruptcy protection since Oct 2005, announced at the start of February it would close its Puerto Real cabling factory in Cadiz.Unions claimed a further 4,000 jobs have been put indirectly at risk by the closure. After several months of dispute, Delpi and the salaried workers reached an agreement in which the US company agreed to pay those made redundant a little more than had been expected.tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomson.comafp/ms1/gpCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
