HONG KONG (XFN-ASIA) - Acer Inc hopes to make an acquisition this year that could help the Taiwan personal-computer vendor increase its global market share further, the company's chairman and chief executive J.T. Wang told the Wall Street Journal.'We are looking at some candidates which we want to pick up,' Wang was quoted as saying in an interview. He declined to name possible targets, but said Acer 'will try to make one this year' in the PC sector and that the acquisition would be 'meaningful.'Wang said he already has one possible acquisition target in mind, and that 'the core team has (had) certain discussions' with that company.Separately, he said that Acer -- currently the world's No. 4 PC vendor by unit sales -- expects its PC unit shipments to rise 30-40 pct this year.As a result, he said he is 'sure' Acer will overtake China's Lenovo Group in global PC shipments on a quarterly basis this year, which would make it third behind Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc of the US.Lenovo might ship more in the current quarter, but Acer would likely overtake the China-based company in the second or third quarter, Wang said, adding that there is a '50 percent possibility' Acer will ship more PCs than Lenovo for full-year 2007.Wang expects Acer's growth in the US to get a push from an agreement signed this year with electronics retail gaint Best Buy Co. That deal should help the US account for 20-22 pct of Acer's revenue this year, up from 18 pct in 2006, he said.Overall, Acer's revenue will grow by a double-digit percentage 'for sure,' he said, but declined to predict an exact figure or give a profit forecast.rc/
