LOS ANGELES (AP) - Comic book publisher Marvel Entertainment said Tuesday it named David Maisel chairman of Marvel Studios, its independent film arm, and appointed Kevin Feige as president of production.

Marvel also announced that Marvel Studios President and Chief Operating Officer Michael Helfant, who had been reporting to Maisel, is leaving the company.

The company said Helfant, who has served in the position since 2005, is moving on 'to pursue other opportunities.'

Maisel, who joined Marvel in December 2003, conceived and executed the company's film production initiative.

Most recently, Maisel headed corporate strategy and business development for Endeavor Talent Agency. He has also served as managing director of European broadband internet company Chello Broadband, president of production company Livent Inc. and director of corporate development and strategic planning for Walt Disney Co.

Feige, who joined Marvel in 2000, is currently producing the movies 'Iron Man' and 'The Incredible Hulk,' which are scheduled for release in 2008. In his expanded role, Feige will also creatively oversee Marvel's animated projects for television and DVD, as well as video games.

Marvel Entertainment shares rose 7 cents to $27.39 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
