MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Industrial manufacturer Honeywell International Inc. said Tuesday it received a $4.7 million contract from Pacific Gas & Electric Co. to start an energy-saving program in some California hotels and motels. The Cool Control Plus program will supply participating property owners with free occupancy sensors in hotel and motel rooms to cut down on heat and air conditioning operation when rooms are empty. Cool Control Plus is available to hotel and motel operators in most areas served by PG&E in northern and central California. The program will last for two and a half years and should save 12 million kilowatt hours, Honeywell said. The sensors should reduce power consumption by about 1,100 kilowatt hours per room each year, on average, resulting in property owners saving as much as $140 per room annually, Honeywell said.Honeywell will also replace lights and modify beverage vending machines and refrigeration equipment at participating properties to make them more energy-efficient, for a 10 percent co-pay.Shares of Honeywell dropped 73 cents to close at $46.88 on the New York Stock Exchange.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
