LINTHICUM, Md. (AP) - A strike by about 1,200 miners at three Foundation Coal Holdings Inc. mines in Pennsylvania and Illinois was settled Thursday, the United Mine Workers of America said.About 250 workers at the Wabash Mine in Keensburg, Ill., and more than 900 at the Cumberland and Emerald mines near Waynesburg, Pa., have been on strike since April 4.'We have successfully concluded negotiations with Foundation's affiliates Cumberland Coal Resources LP, Emerald Coal Resources LP, and Wabash Mine Holding Co. today,' UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts said in an e-mailed statement. 'As of now, our pickets have been withdrawn and our members are preparing to go to work tomorrow.'Roberts said details of the pact would not be released until the local unions had been briefed.'I can say, however, that the union was able to maintain the national contract pattern in all respects at the Cumberland and Emerald mines, and indeed negotiated improvements in the national agreement in several areas,' he said. The United Mine Workers of America worked out a national contract with mine operators in December, but Foundation Coal had argued that workers at the three mines should not be covered by it. The company, which is based in Linthicum, wanted separate agreements because the three mines have different customer bases and logistical and marketing needs that an across-the-board agreement would not address, company spokesman Peter Vietti has said.A spokesman for Foundation Coal did not immediately return a call for comment Thursday night.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
