In an extremely appalling disclosure, spammers were shamelessly found exploiting the late Pope John Paul II’s name in their petty attempts of scraping up money.
A junk email campaign is being run by fraudsters using the Pope’s name as the subject of the email and falsely claims to offer free books written by the Pope in a hyperlink. However, on clicking on the mentioned link, users fail to reach any such website related to the Pope. Instead, they find themselves in a site that advertises a get-rich-quick scheme and offers ‘free money making secrets’.
| Senior technology consultant for anti-virus company Sophos, Graham Cluley said, “Spammers are prepared to plumb the depths in their attempt to get Internet users to buy their goods or services.”
He went on further to say that while the death of the reverent Pope had grieved a million hearts all over the globe, spammers had clearly remained unaffected as they were only concerned about selling their “unwanted wares”.
Sophos also revealed that the same group of spammers were involved in a similar scam that claimed to offer fake prints of an upcoming Harry Potter book.
Any and all spam is bad but in this first case in particular involving the late Pope it is an utter and absolute disgrace. Let us hope that those responsible are found and prosecuted, if not jailed for such acts abnd that the internet in general can clean up it's act regarding spammers and scammers.
