BOSTON (AP) - International Business Machines Corp. said Monday it will consolidate its Massachusetts-based software operations next year at a 3,400-employee campus along Interstate 495 in suburban Littleton and Westford. The move will bring together many of IBM's 5,000 Massachusetts workers who are now spread among eight cities: Bedford, Cambridge, Lexington, Lowell, Marlborough, Westborough, Waltham and Westford. After the transition to the new campus is complete, IBM's Massachusetts operations will consist of sites in Cambridge, Waltham and the new software campus. The campus will be a complex of four existing buildings that are less than 3 miles apart amid the I-495 technology industry corridor that forms a ring around Boston.About two-thirds of IBM's nearly 5,000 Massachusetts employees focus on the technology company's software business. Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM predicts software will generate half of companywide profits by 2010.IBM's software operations have grown through nine acquisitions of Massachusetts companies since 1995, including Lotus Development Corp., Rational Software Corp., Ascential Software Corp., and most recently Waltham-based Watchfire Corp.'We definitely expect to continue growing, both organically and through acquisitions,' IBM spokeswoman Karen Lilla said.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
