PARIS (Thomson Financial) - French engineering group Alstom said it is interested in participating in the development of new nuclear power stations in the UK.In a statement submitted to a public review on the future of nuclear power, Alstom said it is the biggest supplier of turbines for nuclear plants, with around 40 pct of plants worldwide using its equipment.Fellow French energy companies Areva, Suez, EDF have already expressed their interest in developing a next generation of nuclear plants in the UK.State-owned nuclear power group Areva said in June it has signed up six companies -- EDF, Suez, E.On AG, RWE AG, Iberdrola SA and UK incumbent British Energy -- as possible UK users of its third-generation European Pressurised Water Reactor.EDF, meanwhile, said last week it plans to build four new nuclear power stations in the UK, if it gets government approval, with the first expected to come onstream by 2017.The UK government launched a public consultation on energy after presenting a White Paper in May that notably called for the building of new nuclear plants, supported by private-sector investment.tfn.paris@thomson.comgt/lhtCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
