MILAN (AFX) - Enel SpA might enter a bid to build a coal-fired power plant in India in partnership with a local company, chairman Piero Gnudi said.'It's early days yet and we are assessing the situation since an investment of this kind would be massive; we could do it with an Indian partner,' Gnudi said.Speaking at the Italy-India economic forum in Mumbai, Gnudi said the Indian government plans to build 100,000 megawatts of new generating capacity over the next few years. Those plans include a series of auctions for the construction of seven or eight new coal-fired generating plants with capacity of 4,000 MW each.Gnudi said the Indian market had been closed to foreign investors but is now opening up.'We are evaluating the opportunities for investment. If it's worth our while, we must be present,' he said.Enel, which for antitrust reasons cannot grow in Italy, is not currently present in India.Asked about the possibility of new acquisitions in France and Spain, Gnudi said there is no news.'We are monitoring things,' he said.stephen.jewkes@thomson.compw/ms1COPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
