(updates with details of Sunday Times report)LONDON (AFX) - John Lewis Partnership has confirmed the appointment of Andy Street as managing director of John Lewis' department stores.Street is currently director of personnel for the John Lewis Partnership and has been a member of the partnership board for the last four years. He will take up the role on Feb 26 when Charlie Mayfield steps up to become deputy chairman ahead of his elevation to chairman at the end of March.Today's Sunday Times reported, however, that the appointment of Street would be a controversial move, which could result in Gareth Thomas, John Lewis' high-profile director of retail operations, quitting the business.Thomas was understood to have been on a three-man shortlist for the job, along with Street and development director Mark Price. The Sunday Times cited 'city sources' as saying the decision to appoint Street would infuriate Thomas, who helped guide John Lewis to a bumper 10.8 pct rise in like-for-like sales. It quoted an insider as saying it is 'unthinkable' that he would be prepared to stay on in his current role.matthew.scuffham@thomson.commsc/msc/cmlCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
