Portuguese govt denies PTM proposal to pay tax on spin-off with shares - report

LISBON (Thomson Financial) - The finance ministry has denied Portugal

Telecom SGPS' proposal to pay the tax on the planned spin-off of its PT

Multimedia SGPS unit by tendering PTM shares, a decision which will force PT to

flood the market with over 23 mln shares to raise the cash for the tax, Jornal

de Negocios reported citing a source close to the talks between the government

and PTM.

Japan's NEC Electronics' FY operating loss narrows on cost cuts

TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - NEC Electronics Corp's operating loss narrowed in the

fiscal year ended March, mainly because of the effect of cuts in costs, although

weaker-than-expected sales of its semiconductors and falling prices stopped it

from returning to operating profit, the company said.

Net loss - 41.5 bln yen vs loss 98.2 bln

Loss per share - 336.04 yen vs loss 795.13 yen

Japan's biggest large-scale integrated circuit maker provided the following

forecasts for the year to

March 2008:

Revenue - 690 bln yen

Operating profit - zero

Pretax loss - 10 bln yen

Net loss - 15 bln yen
