LONDON - Little Britain stole the show at the 16th annual British Comedy Awards last night and pipped Ricky Gervais' Extras to the post to claim the honor as the best TV comedy of the year 2005.
Matt Lucas and David Walliams grabbed the first Ronnie Barker writer award for this year and triumphed with their BBC show as well. This is the second consecutive year that Little Britain has managed to snaffle the top award. Ricky Gervais also lost out on the Best Comedy Actor award with Chris Langham of The Thick of it fame grabbing that trophy.
However, Gervais can take comfort from the fact that Ashley Jensen won the accolades as the Best Actress. Ms Jensen, who plays Gervais' side kick Maggie in the series also won the best new comer award, "I'm a wee bit speechless and anyone who knows me knows that's an accomplishment," she said upon receiving the award. "I'm completely blown away by the whole thing. It's a dream. I'm happy I won but the prize was getting my job so anything else is a big bonus."
Paul O'Grady of ITV1's The Paul O'Grady show was adjudged the best comedy entertainment personality. He pipped Ant and Dec host Jonathan Ross. The X factor was the best comedy entertainment programme beating BBC's Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and Saturday Night Takeaway.
The Simpsons was the best international comedy for the second year running. Gervais was not entirely happy with the exclusion of Peep Show from the nominations for the best comedy, "It's a debacle. Just because it does not follow EastEnders or Coronation Street... It's the best show on TV," he said. "I'm not confident about this award show. I nearly didn't come tonight...I've got quite a bit of this plastic at home." Victoria Wood and Julie Walters won a special award for working together for over 25 years.
