The mobile phone company, Sony Ericsson, the conglomerate of Sony of Japan and Ericsson of Sweden witnessed a rise in its market share in the second quarter as sales soared by 7% and touched £1.11bn.
The phone company‘s foray into the low and medium priced market considerably won it the laurels as it previously confined its products to the top-notch variety of the market. However, it recorded lower profits of 87m euros over the second quarter against 113m euros last year even as its sales rose to a higher 11.8 million units in this quarter than 1.4 million in the past year.
Chief executive of Sony Ericsson, Miles Flint remarked, “Our market share increased 1% between the first and second quarters, taking it to about 7%. Whereas in the first quarter, we had a relatively mature product range, we now have a fresh portfolio of half a dozen models.” He added that the two-megapixel camera, which offered autofocus, the K750, had struck the right chord with people and was performing especially well along with the firm’s candy-shaped model for third-generation mobile (3G). As of now, Sony plans to distribute about 720 million phones in this year as compared to its previous forecast of a lesser 690 million.
Meanwhile, Sony Ericsson is due to introduce its Walkman music phone by end of July or beginning of August and will commence its marketing in Asia before venturing across the world. Flint expressed confidence about the company’s new Walkman launch.
Close to the first walkman launch in July/August, a second Walkman phone will be introduced in the start of the fourth quarter before Christmas that will be reasonably priced and will track about 100 songs.
