BERLIN (Thomson Financial) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the world needs to be ready to take further sanctions against Iran should negotiations on its nuclear programme fail. The Chancellor, who is meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Wiesbaden today, where they will discuss Iran's nuclear programme, said Iran had violated binding UN Security Council resolutions and ignored the targets set by the International Atomic Energy Agency. She said Iran was a threat to the security of the region, Europe and the world, and this could not be ignored. 'I am firmly in favour of solving the problem through diplomatic means. But we must also be prepared to impose further sanctions if Iran does not comply,' she said.Merkel did not say, however, what form the sanctions should take. Paris and Washington are calling for European sanctions, but Germany and Italy are not keen on this approach.Within the UN Security Council, China and Russia are opposed to further sanctions to force Iran to end its uranium enrichment programme.tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomson.comjlw/vlb/ms1COPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
