PARIS (Thomson Financial) - The French government is to appoint Jean-Philippe Cotis, chief econonmist at the OECD, as the new head of national statistics office Insee, on Wednesday, Les Echos reported on its website.Contacted by Agence France-Presse, Insee, the OECD and the French finance ministry all declined to comment on the report. If the appointment is confirmed, Cotis would replace Jean-Michel Charpin.According to Les Echos, the departure of Charpin is linked to a number of controversies that have affected Insee during his period as director. The newspaper cited the campaign by retailer Leclerc attacking Insee's consumer purchasing-power statistics, and the office's move to delay the publication of unemployment figures for 2006 until after this year's presidential and parliamentary elections.tfn.paris@thomson.comafpgt/sljCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
