Millennium gets new Velcade approval |

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) - Biotechnology company Millennium Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Monday the Food and Drug Administration approved its multiple myeloma drug Velcade for use in patients with impaired kidney function.Impaired kidney function, which includes patients on dialysis, is a common complication in multiple myeloma patients.The drug is already approved to treat multiple myeloma patients who have had at least one prior therapy. Multiple myeloma is a cancer that affects immune system cells in bone marrow. Velcade is also approved to treat mantle cell lymphoma, which accounts for a small percentage of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which affects the white blood cells.Velcade is codeveloped with Johnson & Johnson. Millennium is responsible for Velcade sales in the U.S., while Johnson & Johnson unit Janssen-Cilag is responsible for sales in the rest of the world.Shares of Millennium rose 8 cents to $11.07 in morning trading.
