SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Interactive TV software company OpenTV Corp. reported a fourth-quarter net loss on Thursday, reversing a year-ago profit as costs climbed and the year-ago results were boosted by a gain.The company posted a net loss of $3.4 million, or 3 cents per share, compared with earnings of $2.9 million, or 2 cents per share, during the same period a year earlier.The year-ago quarter's results were boosted by a gain of $3.1 million related to the sale of an investment in a private company.Sales climbed 11 percent to $26.7 million from $24.2 million.Analysts, on average, were expecting a loss of a penny per share and sales of $25.7 million, according to a Thomson Financial poll.For the full year, the company widened its loss to $10.8 million, or 8 cents per share, from a loss of $8.5 million, or 7 cents per share, in 2005.Sales rose 17 percent to $101.9 million from $87.4 million.The company said a 'continued strong performance' in its middleware segment and a 30 percent year-over-year jump in applications segment revenue drove results. Middleware is software that translates information between two or more types of software.OpenTV also grew its customer base during the year, with new deals in France and in emerging markets such as India and China.The company's shares rose 5 cents to close at $2.70 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
