HONG KONG (XFN-ASIA) - The government announced that it has banned all poultry imports from Japan with immediate effect after that country reported a bird flu outbreak.'The decision was taken following confirmation of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5 in a poultry farm in Miyazaki Prefecture of Japan,' said a spokesman for the Centre for Food Safety.Hong Kong imported some 1,800 tonnes of frozen poultry products from Japan from January to September last year.Last Saturday, the Japanese government confirmed the outbreak after 3,900 chickens were found dead at the Miyazaki farm, some 900 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. But it was not clear if the outbreak involved the H5N1 strain, which is potentially deadly to humans.shw/jc/rc
