LONDON: Kaiser Chiefs hogged the limelight at the Brit Awards Wednesday when the new rockers from Leeds landed three top prizes in British music industry's most ecstatic show of the year. The band were named best British group, best British rock act and best British live act of the year, beating rivals including Franz Ferdinand, Hard-Fi and Gorillaz at the event at Earl's Court, London.
In a similar triumph of sorts for pop newcomers, former soldier-turned-singer-songwriter James Blunt secured two awards. Emerging from virtual obscurity to top the charts, Blunt climaxed his memorable year with the Best British Male Artist and Best Pop Act awards. He quipped later: "I've been accused so many times of singing like a girl. Now I've won Best British Male maybe that will remind me I should sing more like a man in future."
The coveted Best British Album Award went to Coldplay who led the revival of new groups in the country. The group won Best British Single of the Year award, its second statuette, for "Speed of Sound".
Yet another sterling performance was from Madonna, known for her reinvention and her best selling dance album, when she was picked as the International Female Artist of the Year.
She thanked her loyal British fans and said, "Without you I would just be another singer across the pond".
Kaiser Chiefs lead singer Ricky Wilson said the awards "mean the world to us".
Scottish singer-songwriter K.T. Tunstall, star of Jools Holland's late-night TV show, received the Best British Female Artist of the Year award and Lemar pronounced the Best British Urban Act.
Arctic Monkeys, were honoured with the British breakthrough-act prize.
Irish band U2, after their sterling show at the Grammys last week, lost to Green Day in the Best International Group and Best International Album awards categories.
U.S. singing sensation Prince, making his first appearance at the Brits after 1997, got the biggest cheers on the stage as he sang "Purple Rain". Kanye West and 77 dancers in gold G strings put up a spectacular dance performance too.
