WASHINGTON (Thomson Financial) - A potentially destructive tsunami was generated by the massive earthquake that struck offshore Peru Wednesday, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The center issued a warning for Peru, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica after the quake late Wednesday, which measured at least 7.7 on the Richter scale and was followed by powerful aftershocks. It also issued a tsunami watch advisory for Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, and Honduras.A tsunami advisory was meanwhile issued for Hawaii in the mid-Pacific.The center said sea level and deep sea instrumentation indicated a tsunami was generated by the earthquake, which struck at 6.41 pm (2341 GMT), with the epicenter located 148 kilometerseast-southeast of Lima at a depth of 40 kilometers. It warned that the tsunami could be a series of waves with intervals running from five minutes to one hour between them, and that the first wave would not necessarily be the largest.afp/msmsCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
