ISLAMABAD (Thomson Financial) - President Pervez Musharraf has signed an order ensuring he retains the power to end Pakistan's state of emergency even after he quits as army chief, according to an ordinance.Musharraf imposed the emergency on November 3 in his role as chief of army staff, but the amendment specifies that from now on it can be revoked by the president. The move follows his repeated commitments to hang up his army uniform -- a key demand of the international community -- as soon as the country's Supreme Court validates his October 6 reelection as head of state.Officials have said they expect the court to rule by the end of November, allowing Musharraf to resign from the army and take the oath of presidential office for a second term as a civilian. However, Musharraf has also indicated that emergency rule should continue until general elections he has promised by early January. The amendment to the Provisional Constitution Order issued on November 3 thus adds a new clause, namely: 'The president may revoke the proclamation of emergency... on such day as he may deem fit.'afp/zrzr/zrCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
