WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bank of America Corp. hired King & Spalding LLP to lobby the federal government, according to a disclosure form.The firm will lobby on improving the quality of patent examination at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, according to the form posted online Nov. 1 by the Senate's public records office.Financial services firms and large technology companies have been lobbying lawmakers on a bill that aims to reduce patent infringement lawsuits and make it easier to weed out substandard quality patents. They are opposed by pharmaceutical, biotech and industrial companies, who contend the legislation would weaken patent protection.William Clarkson, former legislative assistant to Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, is among those registered to lobby on behalf of the Charlotte, N.C.-based bank.Lobbyists are required to disclose activities that could influence members of the executive and legislative branches, under a federal law enacted in 1995.
