MOSCOW (AFX) - The Russian-Spanish former head of a subsidiary of shattered oil giant Yukos has fled police custody while on trial for allegedly helping embezzle 10 bln eur, reported the daily Kommersant.Antonio Valdes-Garcia, 32, former director of Yukos subsidiary Fargoil, was expected to appear at court hearings earlier this month but escaped after locking the police who were guarding him in his own apartment, Kommersant reported. The former Fargoil head, who was born in Moscow but also holds Spanish citizenship, came to Moscow from Madrid in 2005 at the request of the prosecutor general after being assured he would not be arrested, Kommersant reported.Valdes-Garcia was later accused of helping embezzle billions of dollars from Yukos and its subsidiaries with fraudulent oil trading schemes, one of the crimes for which former Yukos chief executive officer Mikhail Khodorkovsky is serving an eight-year term in a Siberian prison after a heavily politicized trial.newsdesk@afxnews.comafp/vs/twCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
